Replacing a car key in Broward

Broward drivers spend a lot of time on I-95, I-595, the Turnpike and the Sawgrass Expressway, and plenty of them leave the car parked for a week while they sail from Port Everglades or fly out of FLL. In a county built around beaches and canals, keys end up in the water. A fob that went for a swim is often done for, even after it dries out. Programming a new key usually also means the lost one can be removed from the car's memory, so ask about that if the old key might wash up somewhere.

Expect to show photo ID and the registration or title in your name. The VIN, visible through the windshield on the driver's side, helps identify the correct key. Some newer models still need dealer equipment, and a locksmith will tell you if yours is one of them.
