What to know before you call

Locked out of a safe

Depending on the safe and the lock, a technician may be able to open it by manipulation (working the lock without damage), by bypass, or by drilling a small, precisely placed hole that can be repaired afterward. Electronic keypads often fail simply because of dead batteries or a worn keypad, which is worth checking first. Expect to be asked for proof that the safe and its contents are yours.

Changing a combination

If people who shouldn't know the combination do — a former employee, a previous owner — change it. A locksmith can reset the combination on most dial and electronic locks, or replace a worn lock entirely.

Anchoring a safe

A small safe that isn't bolted down can simply be carried away. Anchoring it to the floor, ideally into concrete, is one of the most effective upgrades you can make. A locksmith can also help you choose a safe with the fire or burglary rating that fits what you're storing.
