Who else has a key to your Flagler County home?

Rekeying changes the pins inside the locks you already have, so a new key works and every old one doesn't. In Flagler County the reason to do it usually comes down to how many hands a key has passed through, and in a county full of new construction and seasonal owners, that number can be surprisingly large.

Fresh from the builder

Palm Coast keeps adding new houses, and during construction keys and lockbox codes pass between framers, electricians, painters, inspectors and the sales office. Some builders use construction keying systems that are meant to be retired once the owner uses their key, but many buyers would rather not rely on that. Rekeying soon after closing gives you a clean start.

A new house-checker or service company

If you winter here and leave in spring, the house is looked after by someone with a key: a neighbor, a paid house-checker, a pool or pest company. When one of them stops, rekey the doors they could open. It's less expensive than new locks, and it means the only keys in circulation are the ones you just handed out.

Buying a resale from a distant owner

Plenty of Flagler County homes are sold by owners who live elsewhere, or by families settling an estate. Spare keys may be with neighbors, relatives or old contractors, and nobody can give you a full list. Rekey the exterior doors, the garage entry door and any gate locks on moving day. Don't forget the garage door opener remotes and any keypad on the garage itself: reset those codes at the same time, since a working opener is as good as a key.

Making several doors match

Front door, garage entry, lanai slider lock and a shed can easily mean four different keys. If the locks share a keyway, which usually means the same brand, a locksmith can often rekey them to one key. If not, they can tell you which lock to swap to make it work.
