Installing locks in a city of older doors

Winchester has plenty of newer construction, but much of the city — especially in and around Old Town — has doors and frames that have been through many owners and many sets of hardware. That history shows up when you try to fit a new lock: old holes that don't line up, soft wood around the strike, a door that's settled out of square. A locksmith sorts that out so the new lock actually works the way it should.

The strike plate matters as much as the lock

A strong deadbolt set into a weak frame still fails. On older Winchester doors especially, a reinforced strike plate fixed with long screws into the framing behind the jamb makes a real difference to how hard the door is to force.

Historic district buildings

If your building is in Winchester's historic district, exterior changes there are reviewed by the city's Board of Architectural Review. Check with the city before changing visible exterior hardware. If you only need to control keys, rekeying changes nothing that can be seen.

Don't forget the other doors

Front doors get the attention, but side doors, back doors off an alley, basement entries and doors from an attached garage are often where the weakest hardware in a Winchester home is hiding. When you're upgrading, have the locksmith look at every exterior door — including sliding patio doors, which can take a secondary lock or bar — so the house is only as easy to get into as its strongest door, not its weakest.

Many residential locks carry an ANSI/BHMA grade — Grade 1 is the most durable, Grade 2 is a solid residential choice and Grade 3 is basic. A locksmith can recommend what fits your door and your budget, including options that suit an older home's look.
