Fitting new locks in Columbia County homes

Columbia County's housing ranges from older frame houses near downtown Lake City to newer subdivisions and wooded rural lots out toward Fort White and the Osceola National Forest. That range means there's no single right lock for every door. Getting ready for storm season

Before a storm, make sure every exterior door latches firmly and the deadbolt throws fully without pushing on the door. A lock that only works when you lean on the door will be worse after the frame swells. A locksmith can adjust the strike so the lock works cleanly in any weather. If you evacuate or leave the house empty for a while, it also helps to know exactly who has a key — a good reason to rekey first if you're not sure.
