Where I-75 meets I-10 outside Lake City

The interchange just west of Lake City is a major junction for traffic moving through the Southeast, and the nearby exits are lined with gas stations, truck stops, fast-food lots and hotels. That's where many Columbia County car lockouts happen: a fob left on the seat while you pump gas, a trunk closed on the keys at a hotel after a long day of driving, or a key that simply vanished somewhere between Georgia and here.

Tubing season on the Ichetucknee

The park has a north entrance near the headspring and a south entrance on U.S. 27, with trams carrying tubers upriver from the south end.

River days are hard on keys. A key in a swimsuit pocket or a fob clipped to a tube is easily lost in the current, and a car left at one entrance while the group finishes at another can leave everyone waiting. Before you get in the water, decide who holds the keys and where — a waterproof pouch, or locked in a companion's vehicle that isn't going on the river.

Downtown Lake City, the college and the VA

Lake City's historic downtown wraps around Lake DeSoto and the Columbia County Courthouse, with older houses and storefronts on the surrounding blocks. Florida Gateway College and the Lake City VA Medical Center bring students, staff and visitors from across the region. Those institutions look after their own buildings, but the homes, rentals and parking lots around them see the same lockouts and rekeys as anywhere else in town.

Out toward Osceola National Forest

Part of Osceola National Forest lies in northeastern Columbia County, and to the south O'Leno State Park follows the Santa Fe River along U.S. 441. Trailheads, boat ramps and campgrounds in these areas are often a long drive from town. If you're locked out at one of them, drop a pin on your map or note the forest road number and the nearest landmark — it makes a real difference when a locksmith is trying to find a single car in the pines.
