Getting back into a Columbia County home

Home lockouts in Columbia County come from two very different kinds of neighborhoods. In and around Lake City, you'll find older houses on downtown blocks, subdivisions in Five Points and Watertown, and a good number of rentals. Farther south toward Fort White, homes sit on larger wooded lots, some near the Santa Fe and Ichetucknee rivers, where the next house may be out of sight.

Either way, a locksmith's first aim is to open the lock you already have without drilling it, so the door and frame come through the lockout unharmed.

Older houses near downtown Lake City

Houses on the older blocks around Lake DeSoto may have original doors, locks that have been replaced several times, or a deadbolt that has drifted out of line with its strike. That doesn't usually stop a locksmith from opening the door, but it's worth mentioning when you call, and worth having the locksmith check the alignment afterwards.

Rentals around Lake City

If you rent, try your landlord or property manager before anything else — many keep spare keys. If they can't come, a locksmith can help once you show that you live there: a lease on your phone, mail with your name and the address, or ID. Students at Florida Gateway College renting off campus often have a license with a hometown address, so have the lease ready.

Homes out toward Fort White

On the rural side of the county, the most useful thing you can do is give clear directions: the road name, which driveway, and whether there's a gate. Houses set back in the trees can be hard to spot. If you keep a spare with a neighbor, remember that neighbors here may live a fair drive away, so a lockbox or keypad lock can be more practical.

Lost keys mean more than a lockout

If your keys were stolen from a car at a trailhead or a parking lot, or lost somewhere you can't retrace, getting in is only step one. Rekey the locks the same day, especially if anything with your address on it went missing with the keys.
