Households that run on prison shift schedules

The state correctional institutions are a large part of Union County's working life. Union Correctional Institution is near Raiford, the Reception and Medical Center is outside Lake Butler, and Florida State Prison sits just across the county line in Bradford County. Plenty of local households have one or two people on rotating shifts, and lock trouble tends to follow that rhythm: keys left on the seat during a rushed changeover, a house locked tight by the spouse who left for days while you slept after nights, or the only spare hanging on the ring of someone who is now on duty.

Commuting out on 121 and 100

Many residents work outside the county. State Road 121 runs south through Worthington Springs toward Gainesville, and State Road 100 heads east to Starke and northwest toward Lake City. If you lose your only car key at a job in Gainesville, the spare in a kitchen drawer in Lake Butler isn't much use. Commuters do well to keep a second key somewhere they can reach from work — with a coworker, in a locked desk drawer, or with family closer to the job.
