Getting back inside a Duval County home

Most home lockouts end the same way: a locksmith opens the lock you already own, no drilling, and you are inside again. What makes Jacksonville different is distance. The city sprawls so far that the first question is always where exactly you are, and the second is whether you can prove the home is yours, which matters in a city with a lot of renters and a lot of families who arrived recently on military orders.

Name the part of town and the nearest big road

Say "Arlington, off Atlantic Boulevard near Regency" or "Mandarin, off San Jose Boulevard" rather than just a street name, so the locksmith knows which corner of a very large city to head for. Mention a gate code if your community has one, and whether you are in a townhouse row, an apartment building or a detached house.

Off-base rentals versus base housing

If you rent off base near Mayport or NAS Jax, try your landlord or property manager first, since many keep a spare. If they cannot come, a locksmith can, as long as you can show a lease or mail with your name and the address. If your license still lists your last duty station, that is normal; the lease on your phone usually settles it. In base housing, call the base housing office rather than a locksmith.

Old locks in Riverside, Avondale and Springfield

Houses in these historic neighborhoods often carry hardware that has been patched, painted over and re-keyed many times. A key that turns halfway and sticks, or snaps off in the cylinder, is a common result. Stop forcing it. A locksmith can pull the broken piece, open the door and tell you whether the old lock is worth servicing.

Beach houses and salt air

Near the ocean in Jacksonville Beach, Neptune Beach and Atlantic Beach, salt air works its way into lock cylinders. A lock that has been stiff for months can finally refuse to turn on the day you are in a hurry. If the key goes in but will not rotate, do not reach for pliers; a locksmith can usually open the door and clean or replace the cylinder.
