Why island rental owners switch to keypads

For owners of Amelia Island vacation rentals, a keypad or Wi-Fi smart lock replaces the lockbox and the drawer of copied keys. Each guest gets a code that works only for their stay, cleaners and maintenance crews get their own, and the owner can see activity from wherever they live. Full-time residents in Yulee and Fernandina Beach like them too, for dog walkers, deliveries and teenagers who lose keys.

A fresh code for each booking

Many smart-lock apps, and some rental management tools, can generate a code tied to each reservation. Guests arrive, punch in their code, and it stops working at checkout. There are no keys left on the kitchen counter, none carried off in a suitcase, and nothing to rekey after a careless guest.

Lockboxes versus keypad deadbolts

Lockboxes are inexpensive, but the code tends to get shared, and the key inside can be copied by anyone who opens the box. A keypad deadbolt takes the loose key out of the picture. If you keep a lockbox as a backup, mount it somewhere discreet and change its code often. Better still, leave the backup key with a neighbor or manager on the island instead of in a box on the porch rail.

When a storm takes out power and Wi-Fi

Battery-powered smart locks keep locking and unlocking during an outage, but remote access and new codes may not work until the internet returns. Keep a physical key with a trusted local contact, set a few backup codes in advance, and put fresh batteries in before storm season rather than waiting for the low-battery warning.

Fitting the bolt to the strike

A motorized deadbolt must line up with the strike cleanly, or the motor strains, the battery drains fast and the lock may not fully engage. On older island houses with settled frames, that alignment takes some adjustment, which is what a locksmith is there for. A lock that is fitted properly also tends to go longer between battery changes, which is welcome when you are managing it from out of state.
