Amelia Island homes owned from far away

A good share of the houses and condos on Amelia Island are second homes or short-term rentals. That changes the lock problem. The owner may be in another state when a guest is stuck at the door, a cleaner cannot get in between stays, or a lockbox code has been shared one too many times. Keypad deadbolts, code changes between guests, and a trusted local contact holding a real key solve most of it. If you manage island rentals, keeping a locksmith's number alongside the cleaner's and the pool service's is simply good practice.

Historic downtown Fernandina

Downtown Fernandina Beach, centered on Centre Street, is a National Register historic district with around 300 buildings, many of them Victorian and frame vernacular structures from the late 1800s and early 1900s. Old houses there often still carry original mortise locks, and the shop doors on Centre Street have seen generations of hardware. The city's Historic District Council requires a Certificate of Approval for work on properties in its historic districts, so ask the city before swapping visible exterior hardware. Much of Nassau County's growth is landing in unincorporated Yulee, especially along State Road 200/A1A east of I-95, where the Wildlight community has turned timberland into streets of new homes. New construction brings a specific question: during the build, keys and codes passed through the hands of trades, inspectors, stagers and sales staff. Rekeying at closing, or switching the garage keypad and smart-lock codes, is how a new owner starts clean.

West of I-95: Callahan, Hilliard and the back roads

Western Nassau is a different world from the island. US 1 and US 301 meet in Callahan and run north through Hilliard toward the Georgia line, with Bryceville to the south, and many homes sit well off the highway on long drives behind gates. Calls out here often involve farm gates, barns, sheds and pickup trucks as much as front doors. Give clear directions when you call, including the road name, a landmark and any gate codes, because a mailbox number alone can be hard to spot from the highway.
