Lock trouble in a county built for visitors and commuters

Orlando is the county seat and the name most people know, but Orange County is far bigger than the city. It holds thirteen separate municipalities — Orlando, Winter Park, Apopka, Ocoee, Winter Garden, Maitland, Belle Isle, Edgewood, Bay Lake and Lake Buena Vista, plus the towns of Windermere, Oakland and Eatonville — along with large unincorporated communities such as Pine Hills, Alafaya and Horizon West. A lockout call might come from any of them, and the caller is just as likely to be a visitor from another country as someone who has lived here for forty years.

That mix is what makes locksmith work here different. On any given day the jobs include a family whose rental SUV key is sitting on the seat behind a locked door, a student whose roommate moved out in the middle of the lease, a restaurant manager on Orange Avenue who needs the back door rekeyed after a staff change, and a homeowner in a brand-new West Orange subdivision who still has the builder's keys floating around. Tell us where you are and what happened, and we'll put you in touch with a locksmith who works in Orange County.

Rental cars, hotel lots and International Drive

International Drive is the county's main tourist corridor: hotels, restaurants, dinner shows, ICON Park and the outlet malls, with Universal Orlando near its northern end and the Orange County Convention Center further south. Most of the Walt Disney World parks sit in southwestern Orange County too, in the cities of Bay Lake and Lake Buena Vista. The result is a huge number of rental cars parked in unfamiliar lots by drivers who are tired, hot and carrying far too many bags.

If you're locked out of a rental, check your rental agreement first — many companies include roadside help, and some want to be told before anyone else works on their car. If the key is simply locked inside, a locksmith can open the car in the parking lot. The parks and hotels run their own security, so a locksmith meets you at the vehicle, not inside an attraction. Have the rental paperwork and your ID ready.

East Orange: UCF, Alafaya and apartment life

The University of Central Florida's main campus sits along Alafaya Trail east of downtown, and with more than 70,000 students it is one of the largest universities in the country. The apartment complexes that line the roads around it house a big share of those students, plus the young professionals and hospital and tech workers who rent nearby. Leases here change hands at odd times — a roommate leaves for an internship, someone transfers, a sublet starts in January — and every change leaves a key unaccounted for.

Campus residence halls are handled by the university. For off-campus apartments, the leasing office is the first call; if it is closed or can't help, a locksmith can open the door once you show the address is yours.

Winter Park, Maitland and the older lakeside neighborhoods

North of downtown, Winter Park and Maitland have some of the county's oldest housing — lakeside homes from the city's days as a winter retreat, 1920s and 1930s bungalows, and mid-century ranches that have been remodeled several times. Winter Park keeps its own register of historic places, and some of its neighborhoods are designated historic districts, so if your house is designated it's worth asking the city before changing visible exterior features. Rekeying, which happens inside the lock, changes nothing you can see.

Park Avenue, the tree-lined shopping street beside Rollins College and Central Park, adds boutiques, galleries and restaurants in older storefronts — commercial doors that often need a locksmith who knows narrow-stile glass hardware.

West Orange growth: Winter Garden, Ocoee and Horizon West

The west side of the county has grown fast. Horizon West, the large planned community south of Winter Garden, is one of the fastest-growing parts of unincorporated Orange County, and new neighborhoods keep filling in around Ocoee, Windermere and Oakland. New construction brings its own lock questions: builders, trades and closing agents may all have handled your keys before you moved in. Rekeying on move-in day is the simple fix, and a good time to add a smart lock if the house wasn't built with one. Commuters out here rely on the toll roads — State Roads 429 and 408 and Florida's Turnpike — as much as I-4, so a lost key on a workday morning ripples a long way.

Orlando & Orange County locksmith questions

Which locksmith will I be connected with in Orange County?+
We connect Orange County callers with Express Lock & Key, the locksmith we work with across Orlando, Winter Park, Apopka, West Orange and the unincorporated communities in between. Call (321) 405-1983 and tell us the address or the parking lot you're in.
I'm visiting Orlando and locked my rental car keys inside. What should I do?+
Check your rental agreement for roadside assistance first, since some companies want to handle it themselves. If you'd rather not wait, a locksmith can open the car where it's parked. You'll need your ID and the rental contract to show the car is in your name.
Does Florida require locksmiths to be licensed?+
No. Florida has no statewide locksmith license, and since July 1, 2025 state law (section 163.211, Florida Statutes) stops cities and counties from licensing locksmiths, so Orlando and Orange County no longer do. Because there's no license to check, ask for the business name, see ID when the locksmith arrives and get a written price before work begins.
Can a locksmith help me get into my apartment near UCF?+
Yes, for off-campus apartments. Try the leasing office first; if it can't help, a locksmith can open the door once you show a lease, mail or ID with the address. University residence halls go through UCF, not a locksmith.
I just closed on a new home in Horizon West. Should I rekey?+
It's a sensible move-in step. Builders, subcontractors and agents may have handled keys to your house, and rekeying makes all of those keys useless without replacing the hardware.
How is the price set?+
It depends on the job, the lock and when you call. Ask for the full price on the phone, including any service call charge, and get it confirmed in writing before the locksmith starts.
