When Volusia homeowners and landlords rekey

Rekeying changes the pins inside a lock so that it needs a new key, and every key cut for the old setup stops working. In Volusia County the triggers are predictable: moving into a resale home in the western suburbs, turning over a rental in a college neighborhood, and losing a key ring somewhere you'll never find it, like the surf at New Smyrna Beach.

Buying in Deltona, DeBary or Orange City

Much of West Volusia's housing is single-family homes that have had several owners. By the time you get the keys, spares may be with former owners, their relatives, neighbors and contractors. Rekeying every exterior door, plus the garage entry door, on move-in day is one of the cheapest ways to make the house yours. Reset the garage door opener codes while you're at it.

Student rentals by semester

Landlords near Stetson in DeLand and near Embry-Riddle in Daytona Beach see tenants change with the academic year. Each turnover leaves keys you can't account for. Rekeying between leases lets you tell the new tenant, truthfully, that no previous tenant can get in. If you own several units, ask about a master key setup so each unit has its own key and you carry one that opens them all.

Keys lost at the beach or at an event

Losing a house key in the sand or in a crowd is different from misplacing it at home: you know it's gone and you don't know who has it. If your address is on anything attached to the ring, or your car was with the keys, rekey promptly. A wallet or registration card in the same bag gives whoever finds the keys your address too.

If the front door, back door and garage entry each take a different key, a locksmith can often rekey them to match, as long as they share a keyway. That usually means the same brand of lock.
