If a roommate is home, the front door may not be the problem at all, and the locksmith only needs to deal with the bedroom lock.

When the leasing office is closed

Leasing offices at the big complexes keep keys to their units, so during office hours they're usually the quickest way back in. Evenings, weekends and holidays are when a locksmith comes in. Afterwards, let the office know the lock was opened, especially if anything about it seemed loose or worn.

Proving the address when your ID says otherwise

Many JMU and EMU students carry a license with a parent's address in Northern Virginia, Richmond or another state. A lease on your phone, a move-in document from the complex, or mail with your name and the unit number usually settles it. If the only proof is inside, the locksmith can often check it with you once the door is open. Residence halls on campus are the university's responsibility, not a locksmith's.

Shared houses and roommates who left with the key

Some students rent whole houses in the neighborhoods near campus, splitting one lease among several people. When a roommate goes home for the weekend with the only spare, a lockout follows. If your keys are truly lost rather than just behind the door, tell your landlord so they can decide about rekeying.
