Off-campus complexes, leasing offices and bedroom doors

Much of Harrisonburg's student housing is not a house with a landlord down the street — it's a large apartment complex, many of them along Port Republic Road and Reservoir Street, with a leasing office, a maintenance team and leases that are often signed by the bedroom rather than by the unit. In some of those apartments each bedroom door has its own keyed lock, so a resident may carry one key for the front door and another for their own room.

That setup changes who you call. During office hours, the leasing office is usually the first stop for a lockout, since it holds the keys to the units it manages. After hours, or when the office can't reach you, a locksmith can open the door once you show you live there. What a tenant generally shouldn't do is rekey or replace a complex-owned lock on their own — most leases reserve that for management, so ask the office first.

Move-in week, move-out week and missing keys

The busiest stretches for student lock trouble are the days when thousands of people carry boxes through propped-open doors. Keys get packed into the wrong box, left in a parent's car headed home, or handed to a roommate who has already left town. At move-out, a key that never made it back to the leasing office can mean a charge on the account; at move-in, a missing key means someone new can't get into their room.

Football Saturdays and packed lots

When JMU plays at home, lots near Bridgeforth Stadium fill for tailgating, shuttles run from off-campus complexes and visitors park wherever they can find a space. Basketball and concerts at the Atlantic Union Bank Center bring their own crowds. A day spent carrying coolers, chairs and bags is exactly when a set of keys ends up on a car seat behind a locked door. Give the lot name or a nearby landmark when you call so the locksmith can find you among the other cars.

Court Square, downtown and the Market Street corridor

Downtown Harrisonburg was named Virginia's first culinary district in 2014, and the blocks around Court Square are full of restaurants, cafes, shops and apartments above storefronts. Those businesses need storefront doors that latch, back doors that stay secure and keys that don't walk away with former staff. Out on East Market Street and South Main Street, retail centers and offices have the same needs on a bigger footprint.
