In Loudoun County, VA, that question is harder to answer than most places, because so many homes are either brand new or have changed owners in the county's long building boom. Rekeying changes the pins inside your existing locks so they need a new key. Every older key, whoever holds it, stops working.

Builders often install construction-keyed locks, designed so a builder key opens the door during the build and is shut out once the owner's key is used. That's a sensible system, but it relies on every lock working as designed and on nobody having cut a copy of the owner key. Add a real-estate lockbox, a walk-through or two and a punch-list crew, and a rekey after closing is the simplest way to be certain.

Townhomes and single-family houses in eastern Loudoun often end up with a front door, a back or deck door and a garage-to-house door that each take a different key. If the locks share the same keyway — usually the same brand — a locksmith can rekey them all to one new key, which also makes it easier to keep a single spare somewhere sensible.
