Builder keys and the new-construction boom

Loudoun has added an enormous number of homes in recent decades, and much of that growth came in planned HOA communities. A newly built house passes through a lot of hands before closing — framers, electricians, painters, inspectors, cleaners, the sales office and sometimes a real-estate lockbox. Many builders use construction-keyed locks that are meant to shut out the builder's key once the owner's key is first used, but you have no easy way to confirm that happened on every door, and copies made along the way aren't tracked.

Rekeying on move-in settles the question: every cylinder gets new pins, every older key stops working, and your front door, garage-entry door and back door can all be set to the same new key. It's just as sensible for a resale in Ashburn Farm or South Riding, where the previous owners may have handed spares to neighbors, sitters and contractors over the years.

Metro garages, the Greenway and Dulles

The Silver Line reached Loudoun in 2022. The county lists three Metrorail stations inside its borders: Ashburn and Loudoun Gateway, both in the median of the Dulles Greenway, and the station at Dulles Airport. Big commuter garages serve Ashburn and Loudoun Gateway, and most of Dulles Airport itself — with its economy lot and parking garages — sits in Loudoun. Those are exactly the places where a key fob gets left on a train seat or a dead fob battery shows up after a week away.

Western Loudoun: towns, farms and gravel roads

Past Leesburg, the county changes character quickly. Loudoun maintains roughly 260 miles of unpaved roads, most of them in the west, and plenty of homes sit well back from the road behind a gate or a long lane. Old farmhouses in and around Hamilton, Lovettsville and Round Hill often have doors and hardware that have been patched over many years, and a winery or brewery on a weekend can have a full lot and a visitor whose keys are locked in the car.

When you call from out west, give the road name, a nearby crossroad or landmark, and anything that helps identify your driveway. A mailbox, gate or farm sign is often more useful than a house number.

Offices and storefronts from Sterling to King Street

Eastern Loudoun has a large base of office parks and flex buildings along Route 28, the Loudoun County Parkway and Route 7, full of tenant suites that need their own keys, keypads or card readers. Downtown Leesburg, around the courthouse at King and Market Streets, has shops and restaurants in much older buildings. Different buildings, same need: control over who can get in, and a quick fix when a key walks out the door with a former employee.
