Smart locks in a county of newer homes

Smart locks are already on a lot of doors in Loudoun County, VA, especially in newer communities where builders offered smart-home packages. That brings its own questions: who controls the lock, whether old codes still work, and what to do when you buy a house with one. A locksmith can install a new smart lock, help reset an existing one and make sure it fits the door properly.

Taking over a builder's smart-home setup

Some new homes in eastern Loudoun come with a keypad or connected deadbolt tied to a hub or app account that was set up during the sale. Make sure the account is in your name, the builder's or sales team's access has been removed, and the default codes are changed. If the lock can't be fully reset, replacing it may be simpler.

Buying a resale with a smart lock

A previous owner may still have app access, and codes may have been shared with cleaners, relatives or neighbors. Factory-reset the lock, create your own account and codes, and rekey the backup key cylinder too, since the old owners still have those keys.

Weak Wi-Fi in western Loudoun

Not every farmhouse near Hillsboro or Lovettsville has strong internet reaching the front door. A standalone keypad deadbolt, or one that works over Bluetooth without depending on Wi-Fi, can be a better fit there than a lock that needs a constant connection.

The garage-entry door as the smart door

In a lot of Ashburn and South Riding townhomes the family comes and goes through the garage, so that inner door is often the better place for a keypad than the front. Paired with a garage door opener you can control from a phone, it lets a Metro commuter open up for a delivery, a repair visit or a teenager who forgot a key. Make sure the bolt lines up with the strike: a motorized bolt that rubs may report it's locked when it isn't fully thrown. Keep a physical backup key somewhere you can reach from outside the house.
