Much of Clay County's housing was built in the last few decades, often in large subdivisions where the builder installed the same entry set on hundreds of front doors. Those locks are serviceable, but they're usually basic, and nobody can say how many copies of the construction keys were made. Rekeying after you buy, and upgrading the deadbolt on the door you use most, are two of the most common jobs here.

A large share of the county drives north every morning — up US 17 through Orange Park, up Blanding Boulevard toward the Westside, across the Buckman Bridge on I-295, or onto the tolled First Coast Expressway, which now runs from I-10 through the Oakleaf area and down to US 17 south of Green Cove Springs. Toll or no toll, most households here put serious miles on their cars. On the east side, the Shands Bridge crossing carries State Road 16 over the St. Johns to St. Johns County. Long commutes are exactly when a single car key becomes a problem: lose it at work and the car, the school pickup and the evening all depend on getting a new one.

Lake houses around Keystone Heights

Southern Clay County is lake country. Keystone Heights sits beside Lake Geneva and Lake Brooklyn, with Keystone Lake inside the city, and the county runs public boat ramps off State Road 100. Lake houses bring their own lock questions: sliding doors facing the water, boathouses and dock storage that sit empty for weeks, and weekend visitors who need a way in. On busy lake days, keys also get locked in trucks at the ramp while the boat is being launched.

Near Camp Blanding

Camp Blanding, the Florida National Guard's main training site, covers a large stretch of southwestern Clay County, around Kingsley Lake. Guard members, trainees and their families come and go through the area, and many live or stay nearby. Anything on the installation itself is handled by the base, not an outside locksmith, and drivers should follow the post's rules for getting help on base.
