St. Augustine & St. Johns County Locksmith
Coquina-and-cobblestone streets in St. Augustine, beach rentals on Anastasia Island, brand-new houses in Nocatee — one call connects you with Express Lock & Key, the locksmith we work with across St. Johns County.
From the Castillo to Nocatee: what locksmiths see here
St. Augustine is the reason most people have heard of St. Johns County. Founded in 1565, it is recognized as the oldest continuously inhabited European-established settlement in the continental United States, and its narrow downtown streets draw visitors all year. Around it, the county looks nothing like a small colonial town: St. Augustine Beach and the barrier-island communities fill up with rental guests, while the northern end of the county — Nocatee, St. Johns and World Golf Village — has filled with new subdivisions over the past two decades, much of it on land that had no houses at all not long ago.
That mix shapes the calls a locksmith gets here. A visitor locks the rental car keys inside near the Castillo. A condo owner on Anastasia Island needs the door rekeyed after changing management companies. A family closing on a new house off Nocatee Parkway wants the builder's keys retired and a keypad deadbolt fitted. Wherever you are in the county, call (321) 405-1983 and we'll connect you with Express Lock & Key.
Historic St. Augustine: old doors and the review board
Inside the old city, doors can be heavy, hand-built and older than any lock catalog. Some have been refitted many times, and their frames are not always square. A locksmith working here has to fit hardware to the door rather than the other way round, and should be comfortable with older mortise locks as well as modern deadbolts.
St. Augustine also has five Historic Preservation zoning districts. Exterior alterations there are reviewed by the city's Historic Architectural Review Board (HARB) against its Architectural Guidelines for Historic Preservation, and most work needs a Certificate of Appropriateness. Before you swap a visible front-door handle set or add an exterior keypad, check with the city's planning office. Rekeying happens inside the lock and changes nothing on the facade.
Visitors, rental cars and beach days
Visitors arrive all year, and a great many trips end with a car parked somewhere unfamiliar: the Historic Downtown Parking Facility by the Visitor Information Center, a side-street space near St. George Street, or a spot on the sand after driving down a county beach ramp. Lockouts pile up in exactly these places. If you are in a rental car, call the rental company's roadside line first, since some contracts require it. If they can't come, or it's your own car, a locksmith can meet you where you're parked.
Beach rentals and condos
St. Augustine Beach, Crescent Beach, Vilano Beach and Ponte Vedra Beach all have homes and condos that change hands weekly in season. Guests forget lockbox codes, owners change management companies, cleaners carry keys. Rekeying between managers and switching to per-guest keypad codes are the two jobs owners ask about most. Salt air is hard on exterior hardware near the ocean, so finishes and batteries on beach-side locks deserve more attention than they would inland.
New neighborhoods in northern St. Johns
Nocatee grew from a few thousand residents in 2010 to more than twenty thousand by 2020, and the St. Johns and World Golf Village areas have filled in just as quickly. A new house has been through many hands before the buyer gets the keys: builders, trades, inspectors and sales staff. Rekeying at move-in, adding a deadbolt to the door from the garage and choosing a smart lock that suits the family are common first jobs. Gated neighborhoods manage their own gates; a locksmith works on your house, not the community entrance.
