Replacing keys lost on the beach, at the track or on the road

Volusia County is hard on keys. They get buried in sand, soaked in salt water, dropped in a crowd on Main Street or lost somewhere between a campsite and the Speedway grandstands. Many modern car keys, including chipped transponder keys and remote fobs, can be cut and programmed by an automotive locksmith where the car is parked. Motorcycles are a separate case, covered below.

Motorcycle keys during Bike Week and Biketoberfest

Bikes vary widely. On many motorcycles one key works the ignition and the steering lock, and touring bikes often have separate small locks on saddlebags or a trunk. Some newer bikes use a proximity fob rather than a traditional ignition key, and not every model can be programmed outside a dealer. When you call, give the make, model and year, say whether the bike used a key or a fob, and mention any saddlebag locks you also need opened or keyed.

Salt water, sand and a dead remote

Salt water is hard on electronics. If your fob got soaked, rinse it in fresh water, let it dry fully and try a new battery; sometimes it recovers. If it doesn't, a replacement can often be programmed. Most fobs hide a mechanical key for the door, so you may still be able to get in while you arrange a new one. Next beach day, a zip bag or a small waterproof pouch for the fob costs little and saves a lot.

Commuters on I-4

Plenty of West Volusia drivers from Deltona, DeBary and Orange City commute toward Orlando on I-4. If your commuter car has only one key, get a spare made while that key still works. Copying a working key is simpler and usually less expensive than starting from nothing.

What to bring

Have your photo ID and the registration or title for the car or motorcycle. The VIN helps identify the correct key and programming. Some newer vehicles need dealer equipment, and the locksmith will tell you if yours is one.
