Lockouts on a coast you can drive on

Car lockouts in Volusia County have a local twist: some of them happen on the beach. With vehicle access through ramps in Daytona Beach, Ormond Beach, New Smyrna Beach and Ponce Inlet, it's normal to leave the car on the sand, head into the water and come back to find the key locked in the cup holder, or lost somewhere between the towel and the waves.

Inland, the pattern is more familiar: shopping plazas in Port Orange and Deltona, parking near downtown DeLand, and the lots that fill up around the Speedway on big weekends.

Locked out beside the water

Beach driving hours depend on the tide, and the sand near the water can change fast. If you're locked out on the beach, call right away, tell us which ramp you used and roughly where you're parked, and keep an eye on the waterline. If the tide is reaching the car or beach staff ask you to move, follow their instructions. A key lost in the sand means a replacement key rather than a simple door opening, so say so when you call.

Speedway lots on race day

On a Daytona 500 weekend or during Speedweeks, the lots around Daytona International Speedway are huge and full. Before you walk away, note the lot name or number and drop a map pin. If you're locked out after the race, that pin is the fastest way to guide someone to you through heavy traffic.

Rental cars and visitors

Many event visitors fly in and pick up a rental. If you lock the key in a rental car, call the rental company's roadside number first, since your agreement may cover it. If they send you to a locksmith, expect to show the rental agreement along with your ID.

Anyone locked inside

If a child, a pet or anyone vulnerable is locked in a car in the Florida sun, call 911 first. Don't wait for a locksmith.
